44. Army psychologist/pastoral carer

I'm a R.A.F. daughter.

My father didn't tell much about the war, ever.

But his army chaplain trusted me with many experiences, because we shared our vow of silence.
Before he died he needed experiences to be shared, stories to be told.

It has changed me enormously.
I'm still anti-war, but I'm not anti soldier.
In fact, one of my deepest wishes is to become an army psychologist and pastoral carer.
I applied several times, but they considered me too old... whereas I knew there were women of my age working there.
It has hurt me. As if holding a gun and shooting exercises are the only ways to become a good carer.

I for myself know that our family history of the resistance, and all the hours with the army chaplain have given me a better insight, than I can ever gain with added education (I'm a fully trained and experienced psychologist) and physical training.

A few years ago I was talking with Tony Iveson, who looked during his last years so very much like my gram and father. He could have been my dad's brother.
We were talking about the guilt, that is, he was talking about it, and I was listening.
My reaction made him thank me with tears in his eyes.

He said to persist in applying for the job, because I really have to offer a lot. And in case I wanted to work for the RAF, I could contact him, so he could give me a letter to add to the application.

When Tony died I stopped trying.

More than ever I can do the job, work for and with those people who stand up for peace with their own life.
It's loss of talent....

Thank you Tony and Richard for trusting me with your deep inner thoughts and for seeing me and valuing me. I'll never forget you.

41. A shared holiday house.

My dream to have a small house  near the sea won't come true.
I don't have the money, as simple as that.
Buying one is out of the question, and renting one is impossible. It's more expensive that the normal house we live in now.

But I wondered if it would be possible to share a house with friends.

The idea started in my mind when I saw a photo of a friend and his wife celebrating yet another vacation at sea.
One of the children saw the photo and said that she wanted to go to sea the next week.

Two months ago I've been at sea with another friend, and all I can say is that I want to stay there....always.

And suddenly the idea was born: why not share a holiday house?

One of them can buy the house as an investment. I can live there, and when they want to spend a week there I can visit one or more of the children. That way the house is always cared for and always used. I can pay rent, and when others use it as a friend's bed and breakfast their money goes to the owner too.

Or we start a foundation that buys the house.
I think we'll find a way to run the hole business.

When we buy a small house, we can buy a house outside the touristic area, which means it can be occupied all year.

30. Shepherding

Working with a sheepdog seems to be such a privilege.
Even being present at a contest in the UK would make me feel very delighted.

Dog and shepherd are such a close team. It's fascinating to see the dog react to each and every whistle and thus bringing the sheep where the shepherd wants them to be.

To be a good team, it's best when one teaches the dog from the moment he's born, preferably with a well trained older dog.

I don't think I'll have enough time and money to do so.
But I've learned in life never to say never.
And even when it never happens, I've enjoyed what Country File showed.

29. A phone box

The British phone boxes are the most well known telephone-related items in the world.

They were designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and could be found all over the UK.

We had one in our town too, but don't ask how it came across the Channel. It stood in front of a cafe opposite my school.
When the cafe was sold, the box disappeared. I guess the former owner of the cafe took it with him.

Ever since I was in England I wanted such a phone booth either in the garden or in the house.
It might seem a strange wish, but  when you know me well, you know it's a wish that can be expected from me. :)

17. Be a travel reporter

Today I got the question; 'Would I be able to be a travel reporter?'

Wish it was a job offer.
The answer is 'YES!!'

How I know?

Before I studied psychology I studied English. Just a year, but I learned a couple of things that came in handy later in life. One of these things was being a radio reporter. Of course it was to encourage us to speak freely in a foreign language and to have a clear pronunciation.

The choice our team made was for a subject that was in the news at the moment: Mexican archeology. Not very wise. It took us hours and a few broken tongues to pronunciate the names of the old temples of South America. :)
But we did it.

Later we worked together to earn some money for a hotel nearby, they needed a short movie about the hotel and the surroundings. I was the presenter. Showing the viewers the hotel inside out, and the beautiful woods and some interesting museums. I interviewed a few people in front of the camera and I loved it.

I didn't feel the need to see my face in the movie, but I loved to show people around, and rely part on script and part on improvisation.

The secret wish that I wanted to travel with Michael Palin was never expressed and certainly not to him (hiding now), but my friends know I would have liked to travel the world with Erica Terpstra, to show that older female travel reporters can be a true gem for the older traveler.

Now I think I don't need more than a good team to travel with and show the world some very interesting places.

I'm keeping my mail and the comment section open for offers... LOL!

16. Go dog sledding

Maybe it's because I was born in January, in one of the coldest winters. The water beside my mother's bed was frozen.
I love snow. The feeling and sound of it under my feet, the silence when it comes down, and the light on the ceiling when it surprises me when I wake up.

When an online friend moved to Alaska and her husband started training for dog sledding competitions it got all my attention and I even started dreaming about it.

The eagerness of the dogs, the long distances without a human being, the speed, and being part of nature.

There is something drawing me towards the snowy north and it touches me deep in my being.
It's almost as strong as the sea, maybe as strong, but different.
The sea is within reach, just a few hours traveling. The north... it's far, far away.

7. Burning man

Before I saw the images, a report on TV, the name, I knew there should be a place where reality and fantasy could merge because people want to express themselves and be an inspiration for others and share the experience.

I would love to walk into the fantasy of someone else and be a part of it and see others take part in mine. No fantasies of being beautiful, or better, or whatever, no competition, but sharing something creative and spiritual that is living inside every human being, hidden under the layers society wants us to wear.

So I found out about the Burning Man event.
And it made me feel happy.
Knowing it's happening.
And how much I would love to be part of it, with a friend who is able to have fun and be serious at the same time, ...
